Asian elephants, officially classified
as an endangered species, have evolved for 60 million
years. However, if the current rate of decline continues,
they could disappear in just 50 years. Organizations
like the Elephant
Mahout Project in Pattaya, Thailand, and
the
Elephant
Conservation
Center in Lampang, Thailand, are working to preserve the
species by providing medical
treatment to wild and domesticated elephants,
supporting the mahout (elephant keeper) lifestyle
and educating tourists about their special place
in Thai history and culture.
