Asian elephants, officially classified as an endangered species, have evolved for 60 million years. However, if the current rate of decline continues, they could disappear in just 50 years. Organizations like the Elephant Mahout Project in Pattaya, Thailand, and the Elephant Conservation Center in Lampang, Thailand, are working to preserve the species by providing medical treatment to wild and domesticated elephants, supporting the mahout (elephant keeper) lifestyle and educating tourists about their special place in Thai history and culture.
