Elephants have long played an important
role in Thai culture, serving as a symbol of power and peace.
Since Asian elephants require large forest area for habitat,
deforestation
is the
main threat
to
their survival. Today, as few as 500 wild elephants are left
in Thailand, down from the start of the 20th century
when
more than
100,00 elephants roamed the Thai countryside.
